Biblical Humility
Jesus exemplifies the ultimate standard of biblical humility, guiding us through both his teachings and his life. In the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector, Jesus reveals that true humility means complete dependence on God’s mercy.

The Pharisee and the Tax Collector

1. Utter Dependence on God’s Mercy
Jesus teaches against self-righteousness, showing that true humility involves recognizing one’s unworthiness and relying entirely on God’s grace.
• Scripture: Luke 18:10-14 (ESV)
o “For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”
• Lesson: Humility means poverty of spirit, where we recognize our dependence on God’s mercy.
2. Unconcern for Power, Prestige, and Position
True humility doesn’t seek social ranking or status but values service to others.
• Scripture: Matthew 23:8-12; Mark 9:35-37 (ESV)
o “The greatest among you shall be your servant.”
• Lesson: In serving others and taking the lowest place, we embrace a Christ-like humility.
3. Unquestioning Acceptance of God’s Word
Biblical humility is complete obedience to God’s Word, modeled by Jesus’ obedience even to the cross.
• Scripture: Philippians 2:6-8 (ESV); Isaiah 66:2
o “But this is the one to whom I will look: he who is humble and contrite in spirit and trembles at my word.”
• Lesson: True humility involves accepting and obeying God’s Word without question.

3. Peter’s Reaction: Peter initially resisted Jesus washing his feet, not understanding the lesson of humility.
o Lesson: Serving others and receiving service humbly are both essential to following Christ’s example.
4. “Do You Understand What I Have Done for You?” Jesus reminded his disciples to follow his example of humility and service.
o Scripture: John 13:12-17 (NKJV)
